Didn't get the opportunity to check them properly today but have walked around the field the past 4 days and not noticed any issues. Will have a closer look on Friday to check #105
This is a blog for Barton Meadows. The purpose of this blog is for staff and lookers to post a record of their livestock checks. The blog acts as a formal record of livestock wellbeing and welfare checks by providing access to up-to-date information on livestock and site status, and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust

Thursday January 26th
All twelve cattle present and correct . All of them grazing steadily down the south facing slope and up the other side towards the trough . All of them looking fine and no signs of limping apart from one with tag ending 44 which has a slight impairment in the movement of its near hind leg. By no means serious and didn’t slow it down at all but may be worth keeping an eye on . The trough is clear and the water supply working properly . Only four deer seen today .
By way of reminder I cannot check Barton next week or the week after as am away . If anyone can cover in my absence it would be very much appreciated

Wednesday 25th Jan
All 12 cows spread across the field, all on their feet and grazing. Didn't see any limpers.
There was thin ice on the trough which I broke, and 2 cows came up to have some water.

Tuesday January 24th
All 12 animals present and correct in the railway field . Initially all but one were on the south facing slope . One was on its own over by the trough but started to make its way back to the main group as soon as I arrived . The others were all grazing steadily apart from two who were lying down . All looking fine . As I walked across towards their trough they all started to follow , albeit very slowly . I couldn’t see any signs of anyone limping so obviously the grazing team has worked some spectacular magic . Their trough was clear of ice and the water supply working fine . For what it is worth the trough in the other field remains frozen solid and I could make no impression upon it . No less than eight roe deer seen which is the largest number I have seen in the meadow since I started lookering here two years ago.
Also please note that I am away from 28th jan to 12th feb inclusive . This means I cannot check the cows at Barton on Jan 31st, feb 2nd, 7th and 9th . So if anyone can help on these days it would be much appreciated . If you can perhaps you can drop bea and I a line . Thanks very much indeed

Sun 22 Jan
Removed an inch thick covering of ice from the trough.
All but one of the cows was ok.
Only #105 was lying down and it was reluctant to get up as I approached. Once up, it seemed lame on its front right - but as I left it, it was moving around and grazing. I called this through to Fiona, who will pass a message to the grazing team.
No other concerns.

12 cows now in 'small field'
Hello all,
We now have 12 cows on site, access currently just in the compartment I like to call small field, that is closest to the railway line. 2 are lame and are being monitored.
Please check troughs continue to function if cold weather continues, the pipes are well insulated, so if troughs are frozen hard, it might require breaking an ice forming around the ballcock that is under cover, the screws for this are currently jut hand tight so hopefully can be accessed without needing a spanner.
Thanks all!
