Sun 28 Apr

All 9x cows together and grazing in the western enclosure. All seem fine. No concerns.

Trough working fine. I kicked the algae off the surface and it refilled.

The gate is still broken.

SSEN have finished the overhead cable repairs. The trench has been filled. The stock fencing is sound, but the hedge needs replanting.

Gate broken

The top rail of the field gate in the south eastern corner of the western enclosure has broken. The cows were gathered around there recently, so a cow could have leaned on it and broken it that way.

The gate itself is still secure for now, but it needs a repair.

Sun 21 Apr

All 9x cows fine.

8x in the western enclosure. #7 alone in the eastern enclosure, but seems fine - grazing, moving normally, not distressed. In the centre of a flock of 30+ starlings.

Electric fence fine. Troughs fine. Internal field gates open.

Tuesday 16/04 reserve update

Sun!

I found the gate between the two fields closed. So I've reopened allowing access for the cows. Please ensure this is open on your rounds.

The cows are looking well and the site is flushing up as spring rolls through. This is my first year managing the site in spring, lovely to see the cowslips all popping up and skylarks displaying across the meadows.

Checked the reptile matts and saw 6 slow worms.

We have burnt most of the material in the education area. The rest will be left for cover and inverts in piles.

Thanks for your time,

Sam

Reserve Update

 Hi all,

Such a shame to loose a cow but thank you to Chris for bringing this to our attention and blogging. Please continue with your blogging efforts as this is vital for record keeping.

So we now have 9 cows which should stay on site until conditions improve to be moved onto Winnall Moors, next door. But this is all dependent on if it will stop raining!?

In the meantime volunteers have continued to work on removing sycamore and buddleia from the education area which is fantastic. We also installed a temporary electric fence line in part of the large compartment. This is a designated Skylark plot to reduce disturbance from the cows. On your rounds please ensure it is still in tact and cow free.

I cannot remember if I mentioned the electric fence posts dotted throughout the reserve but please leave them in place as they are laid out for the butterfly surveyors.

Thanks for your time,

Sam

Tue 09 Apr

All 9x cows seem fine - all gathered over by the railway line for shelter. Troughs working fine.

SSEN contractors were working overnight at the pole nearest Courtenay Road. The adjacent hedge has been cleared, but the stock fencing is untouched and sound.

Grazing team update please read!

Unfortunately over the weekend one of the cows has sadly died. From what we can see there doesn't seem to be any obvious signs of why possibly meaning it could have been from old age.

Currently it is covered with a tarp as the soonest we could get it collected was Monday afternoon.

If there are any further updates we will let you all know.

No signs of any issues spotted with the rest of the herd and if you have any questions please feel free to ask and we will do our best to answer them.

Thanks
Grazing team

Sun 07 Apr

Unfortunately one of the cows has died - I've reported this to the grazing team, who are dealing with it. The remaining 9x seem fine.
