Saturday 31 Oct

All 52x counted. Some slight lameness in 2 or 3, but this could just be the effects of boisterous behaviour. All otherwise fine and no concerns.

Thursday 29 Oct

Not my usual day, but there was a dog in the eastern enclosure, so I ran out to help.  A passerby (not the owner of course...........) had caught the dog by the time I arrived.  The owner was very apologetic, so lesson learnt in this case.  The dog had not been on a lead - it was a small 2yo yappy thing and I don't think it did anything worse than unsettle the sheep.

I'm not sure whether the signage could ask people to keep their dogs on a lead?

The dog may have got into the field under the gate or through the wire near the water trough in the western enclosure.  Ellie said she will have a look.

I checked on the sheep and calmed them down.  Ollie led them all to me and he rooted through my pockets while I looked over and counted the rest.  All 53x counted and they all look ok.

Mini-sheep was detached from the flock when I arrived.  It was looking a little uncomfortable and walking awkwardly, but re-joined the flock while I was there.  I reported this to Ellie and we agreed to keep an eye on it.

Tuesday 27th October

All 53 sheep OK.

After the fourth consecutive count of 52 from afar, I must admit my heart started racing a bit. Fortunately, stepping forwards 20m showed that actually, I'd been counting two sheep as one large one so I'd found the "missing" one. Enough excitement for one day.

Sat 24 and Sun 25 Oct

All 53x counted, those with limps are looking much better and no messy back ends. The mini sheep was a bit behind the rest of the flock and slow to join them when they all came to the bucket. Nothing specific to be concerned about and I will continue to monitor.

Tuesday 20th October

All 53 sheep counted in the western compartment. The lameness seems to be gone in most of them which is good news. Back ends dried up as well. No coughing from mini sheep.

Antisocial behaviour

At the northern (Headbourne Worthy) end of the western enclosure, there's a bench beneath the beech trees. It's been used overnight as a gathering point and there was evidence of a fire nearby, near the path and outside the enclosure.

There was no damage to our fencing, but glass bottles had been thrown over the fence into the field. I've removed them, but it would be worth us keeping an eye on this area in case it happens again.

Saturday 17th October

All 53x counted. The lame ones seemed to be marked with spray, so I think Ned found them all. The small runt lamb was coughing, so we'll have to keep a close eye on it as the weather gets colder.

All sheep looked at

We have been through all the sheep to look at there feet. The ones that were lame we have marked in blue spray to show we have treated them so hopefully they will improve soon.

Tuesday 13th October

A lot of lame sheep today and a few messy back ends. Reported to Ned and the grazing team will come out tomorrow and get the sheep in and treat them.

The sheep still followed me about and did some jumping, very sweet! I sat down for a while and let them get used to me a bit.

Saturday 10th October

All 53x counted and I spent a nice long time with them today. As Ellie and Kate have noted, one white face and one brown face are showing lameness, although the brown face one is looking better. Otherwise they all look well.

Friday 9th October

All 53x counted. They were really inquisitive, so was hard to get a decent view of them. Olly was very friendly and nuzzling my leg - it's nice to know his name.

Tuesday 6th October

Took a few attempts but 53 all accounted for. One of the brown sheep (not the one pictured) is very lame on its front leg, will report to grazing team. The very little lamb was coughing when I first arrived but seemed fine when I was leaving. Some of the lambs are becoming far more curious!

The very friendly black sheep is one I hand reared a couple of years ago called Olly, it is nice to have him on one of my sites.

As I left I got followed down the hill by half of the group running and jumping, it's so funny to see them when they're all excited. Glad they're doing so well.

SAY CHEESE!!
